How to choose the right battery in South Africa
Fitment, cranking power, capacity and chemistry — explained in plain language, then matched to the Trion range that suits your vehicle or system.
Start with what you’re powering
What battery do I need for my car?
Match three things in this order: the group size that physically fits your battery tray and terminal layout, the cold cranking amps (CCA) your manufacturer specifies, and the technology your car expects. Anything that fits the tray, meets or exceeds the CCA rating and matches the terminal orientation will start your car reliably.
This is you if
- Short daily trips, mostly city driving
- Standard petrol or diesel engine without stop/start
- You want the cheapest reliable replacement, or the longest-lasting one
We’d recommend: Trion Blue for dependable everyday value, or Trion Green when you want premium durability and a longer warranty.
What the numbers on a battery actually mean
CCA (Cold Cranking Amps)
How much current the battery can deliver to turn a cold engine over.
Matters for: Starting batteries. Never go below the manufacturer's rating; going higher is fine.
Ah (Amp-hours)
How much energy the battery stores — the size of the tank.
Matters for: Solar, backup, marine house banks and anything that discharges slowly over hours.
RC (Reserve Capacity)
How many minutes the battery can run essential loads if charging fails.
Matters for: Vehicles with heavy electrical loads and long journeys.
Group size
The physical case dimensions, terminal type and terminal position.
Matters for: Every replacement. If it doesn't fit the tray and clamps, nothing else matters.
Depth of discharge
How much of the rated capacity you can safely use each cycle.
Matters for: Comparing lithium to lead-acid — usable capacity differs far more than the label suggests.
Cycle life
How many charge/discharge cycles the battery survives before capacity fades.
Matters for: Daily cycling in solar and backup systems, where this drives cost per year.
Which Trion range fits your use case
| Range | Best for | Chemistry | Key strength | Warranty |
|---|---|---|---|---|

| Trion Lithium | Solar, backup and deep cycling | LiFePO₄ | High usable capacity, long cycle life, maintenance-free | 3 / 5 years |
| Trion Group 31 | Trucks, fleets and machinery | Lead-acid | High cranking power and vibration resistance | 12 months |

Battery questions we get asked most
Read the group size and CCA rating off the label of the battery currently fitted, or check the owner's manual. Then match the case dimensions, terminal type and terminal position exactly — a battery that fits the tray but has reversed terminals won't reach the cables. Our team can confirm fitment for your vehicle before you order.
